National Conference on Literacy
I created this info graphic specifically to be used in the art room to introduce multiculturalism to my students. This lesson will help them to become aware of the diversity that surrounds them. Cultural responsive instruction is important to use in the class room because it introduces them to subjects that they may be unfamiliar with, exposing students to diversity makes them more accepting of differences and encourages them to learn more.
I incorporated several strategies in this lesson the would encourage literacy. Students were tasked with filling out a graphic organizer that describes themselves. Students will need to reflect on who they are as individuals using critical thinking to complete their word web. Students will then need to do some research about the culture they intend on making an artifact about. Students are able to choose a culture they are a part of which will help build confidence. Allowing students to participate in a show and share will have the students verbally announce their learning. Students not presenting will be given a chance to ask more in depth questions to the presenter which will stimulate a conversation among them that will encourage cultural learning.
This activity would benefit all students because it gives them an opportunity to introduce themselves to the class in a unique way. Shelby would greatly benefit from this lesson because it allows her to create something that she is familiar with, this would give her a sense of belonging while also reminding her of home. During show and share she would be able to educate her peers about herself and where she comes from, which could be the gateway to her interacting with her peers on a more personal level. This lesson could be effective in allowing Shelby to adjust to her new life in America. She would be able to discuss topics that she is familiar with which she might not have the opportunity to do so in other subjects.
